Our progression of vocabulary document is now available for EYFS - KS2. Here's how to use it.
Vocabulary is an essential part of allowing pupils to articulate and explore complex ideas. In a subject like science, where many words and phrases are typically outside the realms of everyday language or suggested phonetic words for an age group, it is even more important.
In our newly released progression of vocabulary documents, we outline how key scientific terms and words are introduced and developed from EYFS to Year 6. This systematic approach ensures that pupils build on their knowledge year after year, creating a solid and consistent approach to learning.
In our document, we have grouped vocabulary into broad curriculum topics. For example, in ‘Animals including humans’, EYFS children start with simple terms like ‘senses’, ‘sight’ and ‘taste’. As they progress, these words become more specialised. By Year 6, pupils encounter terms like ‘diffusion’, ‘osmosis’ and ‘circulatory system’, equipping them with the language needed to explain scientific phenomena with increasing precision. Some words are used repeatedly across different topics and year groups, helping students to make connections and become familiar with using the same term in different contexts.
Scientific vocabulary is essential for understanding and engaging with the world, both in scientific and non-scientific contexts. Terms like ‘predict’, ‘investigate’ and ‘fair test’ in Year 1 allow pupils to start thinking scientifically and equip them with the correct terminology to use in practical work. As they move through school, the vocabulary grows in complexity, allowing pupils to delve into areas like anatomy, ecosystems and materials. This gradual progression helps them not only understand the science ‘content’, but also develop their scientific enquiry and disciplinary skills.
For you, embedding vocabulary into lessons is a key part of creating scientific literacy. The best part is that Developing Experts already does this for you! With selected keywords both highlighted and embedded within lessons, pupils are consistently encouraged to use precise language. You also have the option to use our narration feature on our presentations, which will read out each keyword for you. This feature - combined with our presentations, quizzes, and handouts - is the perfect way to make sure your pupils consistently develop scientific literacy, both verbally and written. Whether they’re discussing habitats in Year 2 or ecosystems in Year 4, vocabulary is essential in expressing ideas clearly and confidently.
Our vocabulary document is designed to support teachers in ensuring every pupil has the language tools needed to excel in science. Find it on www.developingexperts.com in your Curriculum Documents section now.
