Last week, DE had the pleasure of taking a tour of the beautiful Dorset countryside with local expert Mark Bardsley. The locality around Poole has a fantastic range of interesting scientific and geological areas and we were honoured to have Mark with us to explain about the history, geology and wildlife.
Last week, DE had the pleasure of taking a tour of the beautiful Dorset countryside with local expert Mark Bardsley. The locality around Poole has a fantastic range of interesting scientific and geological areas and we were honoured to have Mark with us to explain about the history, geology and wildlife.
From Lulworth Cove and Durdle Dor, to Poole Harbour and the stunning Corfe Castle, Dorset has so much to offer. Mark supported us by being filmed talking about the fossilised rocks found on the Jurassic coast as well as the local habitats for animals. He also had some fascinating (and gruesome) stories about the various goings-on at Corfe Castle, some of which will appear on our History curriculum.
One of the most fascinating elements of our trip was actually found in a pub garden, where all of the outdoor seating area was made using fossilised rocks and tree stumps. We also found a whale's jawbone, which was over 3 metres long.
In this video, with the backdrop of Corfe Castle, Mark explains about a fossilised rock which is over 140 million years old!
