Filming with Dr. Mandy Hartley

Mandy spoke to us about deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the carrier of genetic instructions in nearly all living organisms.

Dr. Mandy Hartley has a PhD in genetics and worked with DNA for over 15 years. She has used DNA to help conserve stocks of fish, to help patients with genetic diseases, to solve forensic cases and trace long lost families using relationship testing.

Mandy now runs workshops to teach school children about DNA. She uses stories to teach difficult concepts such as natural selection, inheritance and evolution to children. She is also an author and has written a series of “DNA Detective” books which teach children about DNA, cells, inheritance and forensic science. The books cover many topics in the curriculum for science and literacy and have been written to inspire children with a love of science and reading.

On our filming day, Mandy discussed the structure of DNA, the history of its discovery and even showed us how to extract the DNA from a banana using simple household items! We really appreciate Mandy taking the time to visit our offices and enrich our platform with her knowledge.
