What the colour Teal means to us.
Here, at Developing Experts, our brand identity is really important to us. We have an inclusive ethos, whereby all our staff feel part of our journey, enjoy working and are determined to make our product accessible to as many children and teachers as possible.
A brand is underpinned by how users or customers look at it. Believe it or not, the colour associated with a brand is really important, and there is a bit of science behind it too…
Our brand colour is teal (or code #33CCCB to be precise). The colour ‘teal’ was first named in 1927 and is actually named after a bird - the common teal. It has a similarly coloured stripe on its head (there you go, some biology). Like most colours, it has gone through stages of popularity, such as in the 1950s and 1960s, it was widely used by interior designers. It was also a bit of a craze in the 1990s with many sporting teams adopting the colour.
There is a lot of psychology behind colours, too. For example, we often associate the colour red with passion, love and power. So, what about teal? Well, the attributes associated with the colour are commonly thought to be: clarity, idealism, balance, creativity, compassion and self-sufficiency. Attributes which we, here at Developing Experts, are proud to be associated with.
The website colorpsychology.org says “The soothing blue-green shade evokes tropical lagoons and dense jungles. From oceans to peacock feathers, teal is a common sight in the natural world. Polls show that blue and green are Americans’ favourite colours, and teal is the happy medium. Teal is the colour of restfulness and mental and spiritual balance.” Wow.
The last sentence may explain why our Chief Content Officer, Paul Usher, has designed his office room at home using teal and grey, to keep him restful and balanced. Or it could just be because he can’t bear to be away from the beautiful teal shades of our office!
